Going on a South Dakota Vacation
Probably the hardest part of going on a South Dakota vacation is trying to pick just a few things to see and do from a list that includes hundreds and maybe thousands of things to visit and explore in the state. A South Dakota vacation means that you are going to have a good time and see lots of interesting and one-of-a-kind things.
A South Dakota vacation for 99 percent people includes a visit to Mount Rushmore. The sculpture is one of the largest in the world and features four of the country's ex-Presidents. George Washington, the first President, Andrew Jackson, who was President during the Louisiana Purchase, Abraham Lincoln, who guided the country during the Civil War, and Teddy Roosevelt, who was in favor of creating a National Parks system and spent some time in South Dakota, are the subjects of the sculpture. The project was started in 1927 and took 14 years to complete. If your South Dakota vacation makes its way to the park, you will also find a large complex surrounding the monument that includes a historical movie that shows how the sculpture was conceived and built. It's quite impressive.
Mount Rushmore is far from the only thing that you will find when taking a South Dakota vacation. The state is also known for its large number dinosaur remains that have been found. The entire state used to be covered under a glacier during the Ice Age, which preserved many dinosaur bones. The giant Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton that is found at Chicago's Field Museum was originally found in South Dakota. The Badlands National Park also features many fossils. Suffice it to say, if you're interested in dinosaurs you won't be disappointed when taking a South Dakota vacation.
Of course, South Dakota vacation plans also include fishing and hunting for many people. That's because the state offers plenty of both. There are more than 1,100 square miles of water in the state and fishing season is year round. The state is split into four regions for fishing enthusiasts: Western (Black Hills, Badlands, Lakes regions), Central (Great Lakes region), Northeast (Glacial Lakes and Prairie Regions) and Southeast (Prairies region). Each area is perfect for those who want to turn their South Dakota vacation into a fishing excursion.
In the winter, there are still plenty of options for a South Dakota vacation even though it might be snowing and cold. Options include skiing, skating or ice fishing. There are also approximately 325 miles of snowmobile trails in the Black Hills, which is located in the western part of the state.
