South Dakota Travel Destinations

Family South Dakota campground in Sioux FallsOne of the best things about South Dakota travel destinations is that there is seemingly an endless amount of things to do and see while in the state. South Dakota travel can include visits to some of the most recognizable monuments in the world to a plethora of outdoor activities.

Of course, South Dakota travel destinations usually have one thing at the top of the list: Mount Rushmore. The monument is one of the most famous sculptures in the world and definitely one of the most impressive based on the complexity and daring of the sculpture itself. Mount Rushmore features the faces of four former American presidents: Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, George Washington and Andrew Jackson. Abraham Lincoln was President of the U.S. during the Civil War, while George Washington, of course, was the first-ever U.S. President. Andrew Jackson was President during the Louisiana Purchase, a purchase that nearly doubled the size of the country when it was made after a deal with the French government. The selection of Teddy Roosevelt might seem like an odd choice, but it comes because Roosevelt was a proponent of the National Parks system and he was an avid outdoorsman that spent some time in South Dakota. A South Dakota travel plan is not complete without Mount Rushmore on the schedule.

Another nearby sculpture that should be on South Dakota travel plans is the Crazy Horse Memorial. The sculpture is not yet complete but it is obvious that when it is done it will be an impressive display. The monument memorializes Crazy Horse, one of the country's legendary Native American chiefs. When the project is completed, it will be the largest mountain sculpture. When completed, it will stand 641 feet long and 563 feet high, making it another must-see for South Dakota travel plans.

Something else to check out when South Dakota travel plans are made is a visit to Deadwood. The town is an old-fashioned Wild West town. The town has been named a national historic landmark and visitors flock to the town because of its gambling establishments, a nod to the town's sometimes wild and dangerous past. Wild Bill Hickock was killed while visiting Deadwood, and memorials to the famous cowboy litter the town's landscape. South Dakota travel destinations should definitely include a stop here to see what the state used to be like in the past.
