Sioux Falls, SD is located near the Eastern border of the state, approximately five miles from Minnesota and eight miles Northwest of Iowa. Attracted by the characteristically beautiful Big Sioux River waterfalls, land speculators in 1856 claimed the land on the banks of the river which would one day be Sioux Falls SD with the intention of turning it into a town before the arrival of railroads and settlers.

Comprised of 1,200 acres, the village of Sioux Falls was incorporated in 1876, and the city charter granted on March 3, 1883. With the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s, the population of Sioux Falls, SD exploded from 2164 to 10,167 by 1890. Sioux Falls, SD has been growing and prospering since, with stable and impressive development continuing into modern times.

Sioux Falls, SD is the largest city in the state, and has both an airbase and a military radio and communications training school. Rated by the Ryder Consumer Truck Rental company as the nation's number one destination of cities with populations above 100,000 in 1993, it is a locus of both urban and rural commerce and association. A popular camping and tourist destination, it boasts a bike trail system across the city's park greenway that provides a scenic and relaxing change of pace from the workaday bustle. Sioux Falls, SD is also the shopping hub of the central plains, boasting a wide array of stores and shops, and several shopping malls.
